Nagaland government has assured the Supreme Court that the municipal elections in the state, incorporating a one-third quota for women, will be completed by April 30, 2024. This announcement follows the passage of the Nagaland Municipal Bill 2023 by the state Legislative Assembly, a move welcomed by the Supreme Court.

Balgopal, representing the state government, informed the bench of Justices S.K. Kaul, Sudhanshu Dhulia, and Ahsanuddin Amanulla that the process would be expedited, with results expected to be declared by April 2024.
The court ordered a listing of the matter on December 11, recognizing the significant development in the form of the new legislation.
The Nagaland Municipal Bill 2023, passed unanimously by the Nagaland Assembly, reserves one-third of seats in urban local bodies for women. Chief Minister Neiphiu Rio presented the bill during an emergency session, emphasizing the importance of women's participation in the administration of urban local bodies.
Deputy Chief Minister and Select Committee Convener, TR Zeliang, expressed support for the bill, highlighting the extensive consultation process with various stakeholders, including elected members, Chief Secretary, Department Officials, and Civil Society Organizations.
