The case revolves around alleged copyright infringement linked to the Netflix documentary Nayanthara: Beyond the Fairytale, which includes visuals from the 2015 film Naanum Rowdy Dhaan.
Naanum Rowdy Dhaan, a romantic comedy featuring Nayanthara and Vijay Sethupathi in lead roles, was directed by Vignesh Shivan and produced by Dhanush’s Wunderbar Films. The film was both a critical and commercial success, with its songs and scenes gaining immense popularity. Years later, when Nayanthara decided to feature snippets of the film in her Netflix documentary, tensions arose over the lack of authorization.
The documentary, which offers a glimpse into Nayanthara’s life and career, included clips from Naanum Rowdy Dhaan. The situation escalated when Nayanthara and her team went ahead with the documentary’s release, prompting Wunderbar Films to take legal action.
In the civil suit filed by Wunderbar Films, the production company alleged unauthorized usage of Naanum Rowdy Dhaan visuals in the Netflix documentary for what it terms a clear violation of intellectual property rights.
