Nearly 44 crore Indians will likely be obese by 2050: PM Modi sounds alarm over obesity report; calls it 'dangerous'
Narendra Modi on Friday sounded alarm over the increasing cases of obesity in India and urged citizens to cut down on their cooking oil consumption to tackle the crisis.
Quoting a report by the Lancet journal, Modi said that 44 crore Indians were at the risk of getting obese and called it a 'dangerous' prediction.
«A report says by 2050, 44 crore Indians will be obese, which is dangerous,» said PM Modi.
This isn't the first time Modi has cautioned India on the risk of obesity. During a Mann ki Baat address, the PM called for nationwide awareness and collective action to combat obesity. He emphasized the need to reduce edible oil consumption and encouraged prominent individuals to lead awareness campaigns. “By making small changes in our food habits, we can make our future stronger, fitter, and disease-free,” he said.
What does the report say?
By 2050, China, India, and the United States are projected to have the largest populations of overweight and obese adults, signaling a looming global health crisis with dire economic repercussions.
