Uttar Pradesh will not serve non-vegetarian fare on Monday, while restaurateurs in some other markets will restrain from selling alcohol or meat 'as a mark of respect' for the Ram temple consecration ceremony in Ayodhya.
Uttar Pradesh and states such as Rajasthan and Haryana have prohibited the sale of liquor ahead of the ceremony. «We sought clarifications and have been advised by the food commissioner to avoid the sale and service of non-vegetarian food as the sale of meat in butchery shops is already prohibited for Monday,» said Varun Khera, chapter head for Uttar Pradesh, National Restaurant Association of India.

«Since the advisory has come from the top, we have taken cognisance of this and have requested the industry to observe a no non-veg day on Monday.
The malls have also started issuing notifications around this,» he added.
Restaurateurs familiar with the matter said a message circulated by food delivery platform Swiggy to restaurant partners in the state said the Uttar Pradesh government has mandated a statewide prohibition on the sale of meat, fish, and liquor on Monday in observance of 'Pran Pratishtha Day' at the Ram temple in Ayodhya. «In accordance with this mandate, Swiggy will be switching off all non-veg items on your menu on January 22.
These items will be switched on again on January 23. Your cooperation in adhering to these government guidelines is crucial and greatly appreciated,» read the statement from Swiggy.
