Netflix users will no longer be able to share accounts or passwords with friends for free. Netflix will impose a total ban on account and password sharing in several countries such as India, Croatia, Indonesia, and Kenya, from July 20 onwards. The main objective of this move is to boost revenue growth.
In a letter addressed to shareholders, Netflix announced that it would disable the ‘extra member’ option in the markets mentioned above as they recently cut prices in many of them. Moreover, the market penetration in these countries is still relatively low. The streaming giant reduced its prices in India by 20-60 per cent in December 2021.
This helped the company grow by 30 per cent during that year. Currently, members who have borrowed accounts will be able to transfer their profiles to new and existing accounts. The organisation will be also be sending emails to those sharing accounts outside their immediate family.
Now users who attempt to share accounts outside their families will have to pay an additional fee. Netflix's crackdown on account and password sharing seems to have paid off as the streaming titan has gained about 5.9 million paid subscribers in the second half of 2023. The subscription service’s overall subscribers stand at a whopping $238.4 million currently.
