Ola and on-demand logistics startup Porter are the worst platforms for gig workers, said research firm Fairwork India, after evaluating 12 companies.
Both Ola and Porter scored zero on a scale of 1 to 10 when evaluated for minimum standards of fair work in the platform economy, according to the ‘Fairwork India 2023’ report.
The report looked at 12 platforms: Amazon Flex, Bigbasket, BluSmart, Dunzo, Flipkart, Ola, Porter, Swiggy, Uber, Urban Company, Zepto and Zomato. It evaluated platforms offering location-based services against five Fairwork principles: fair pay, fair conditions, fair contracts, fair management, fair representation.
This year, no platform scored more than six out of the maximum of ten points.
With a score of one out of 10, cab aggregator Uber and cash-strapped quick commerce firm Dunzo were among the worst-ranked platforms for gig workers among the 12 companies evaluated.
Tata-owned BigBasket was the top performer with a score of six.
In its first year of participation, ride-hailing platform aggregator BluSmart scored higher than more established platforms in its sector, with 5 points out of 10.
Bigbasket, Flipkart and Urban Company were the only platforms with a minimum wage policy to ensure that all their workers earn at least the hourly local minimum wage after factoring in work-related costs.
