Government organisations faced over one lakh cyber security incidents till June this year, while financial institutions saw over four lakh incidents, numbers presented in the Lok Sabha on Wednesday showed. Government organisations have faced 1,12,474 cyber security incidents till June this year, minister for electronics and IT Ashwini Vaishnaw said in the Lok Sabha on Wednesday in a written response.
The Indian Computer Emergency Response Team (CERT-In), which has the mandate of tracking and monitoring cybersecurity incidents in India, reported 70798, 85797, 54314, 48285, 192439 and 112474 cyber security incidents related to government organisations or systems for the years 2018, 2019, 2020, 2021, 2022 and 2023 (upto June), respectively, the minister said. “With innovation in technology and rise in usage of the cyberspace and digital infrastructure for businesses and services, cyber-attacks pose a threat to confidentiality, integrity and availability of data and services, which may have direct or indirect impact on the organisation,” he said.
“Such impact is specific to the impacted entity, and depends on the extent to which its data, assets and services are affected by such attacks.” Further, data presented by minister of state for electronics and IT Rajeev Chandrasekhar in a separate reply in the Lok Sabha showed that financial institutions saw 6168, 700548, 862073, 826978 and 429847 incidents in 2018, 2019, 2020, 2021, 2022 and 2023 (upto June), respectively.
