Aadhaar card to multiple SIM cards continues unabated. A startling case came to light when the cybercrime wing of Tamil Nadu Police discovered that a single individual managed to obtain 100-150 mobile connections using a single Aadhaar number. Subsequently, the wing contacted the relevant mobile service providers to cancel these suspect connections.
Over the past four months, the Tamil Nadu cybercrime wing has blocked a staggering 25,135 SIM cards across the state due to suspicions of fraudulent activities. In another incident in Vijayawada, 658 SIM cards were issued under a single photo identity. All these SIM cards were registered under the name of Polukonda Naveen, who supplies SIMs to mobile shops and kiosks where customers purchase SIM cards.
The Department of Telecommunications (DoT) reportedly stumbled upon this issue thanks to a toolkit utilizing artificial intelligence. The ASTR (Artificial Intelligence and Facial Recognition Powered Solution for Telecom SIM Subscriber Verification) software identifies SIM card fraud and prevents the usage of numbers with falsified identity proofs. The software captures and filters images of SIM card holders from various telecom operators, revealing an alarming trend of multiple SIMs being obtained with a single photo.
To address concerns and help subscribers, the DoT has launched the Telecom Analytics for Fraud Management and Consumer Protection (TAFCOP) portal. This portal enables users to ascertain the number of mobile connections registered under their Aadhaar cards. How to know the Number of Aadhaar-Linked Mobile Numbers: * Visit the official website at https://tafcop.dgtelecom.gov.in/. * Enter your mobile phone number and click Request OTP.
