Narendra Modi is likely to hold three public meetings in West Bengal's Arambag in Hooghly district and Nadia district's Krishnanagar on March 1 and 2 respectively, followed by another public rally in Barasat in North 24 Parganas district, the same district where Sandeshkhali is located, on March 7.
The Prime Minister is likely to meet the women of Sandeshkhali, who were allegedly tortured and assaulted, in the sidelines of his public meeting, people in the know said. Modi's visit is very significant amid intense trouble in Sandeshkhali and in the run-up to the Lok Sabha polls. However, the final dates are subject to confirmation by the PMO.
Modi will be visiting Arambag and Krishnanagar on March 1 and 2 respectively. His visit to Krishnanagar is significant, considering the substantial Matua votebank, which is crucial to BJP in Lok Sabha polls.
Modi's visit comes amid trouble in Sandeshkhali, following allegations by the local women about land-grab, sexual assault and subsequent protests by BJP state President Sukanta Majumdar, Leader of Opposition (LoP) Suvendu Adhikari and BJP women MPs in the area. Adhikari has also called it “epicentre of change” in Bengal and reason behind Mamata Banerjee’s fall.
A resolution on Sandeshkhali was brought in BJP's national convention recently in New Delhi. «During PM's rally, we will urge the women of Sandeshkhali who were victims of torture, to come to the public rally. They can talk to the PM there,» Sukanta Majumdar has said.
