PM Modi made reference to actions taken by India’s first Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru and former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi as examples of the Congress’s alleged attempts to disrespect the constitution.
In his address, PM Modi claimed that Nehru had expressed a willingness to change the Constitution if it posed a «hindrance.»
“In 1951, PM Nehru wrote to the Chief Ministers, saying that if the Constitution becomes a hindrance for us, then we should bring change to it. This is what Nehru said!” the Prime Minister said. “We should also note that the country did not sit silently. The President at the time Dr Rajendra Prasad and Speaker warned Nehru ji and tried to stop him. But Nehru followed his own constitution.”
PM Modi alleged that «one family» within Congress had caused significant harm to the Constitution, leaving a lasting impact on Indian democracy.
