Narendra Modi on Saturday pledged complete support to Kerala in rehabilitating hundreds of people and their families displaced by the recent landslides and flash floods in Wayanad.
The PM conducted an aerial survey of the landslide-hit regions and visited the affected families at relief camps and injured persons at the local hospital after arriving by helicopter from the Kannur international airport. Accompanied by Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan, Modi reviewed the damage at the worst affected areas of Punchiri Mattam, Mundakkai and Chooralmala.
Meppadi, Mundakkai and Chooralmala suffered the worst catastrophe in landslides caused by continuous rains and swollen streams on July 30 morning.
The union government and the entire nation will stand by the displaced families as well as the Kerala government as they battle one of their worst natural disasters, the PM said in a message, later.
Kerala, on Friday, sought Rs 2000 crore from the Centre. The PM, however, urged the government to send a detailed memorandum for funds for the elaborate rehabilitation programme. The Centre, he added, would support Kerala generously.
Modi assured the affected families that the rehabilitation work will continue and not stop, at any cost, for want of funds.
The government will prioritise the future of the people displaced by the landslides. He said he has a first hand knowledge of the intensity of a natural disaster, recounting his personal experience after the collapse of Morbi dam in Gujarat in 1979.
