Pune Police have announced a ban on transgenders from forcefully asking for money at traffic signals and from houses.
«It was noticed that transgenders and other such individuals visit houses or establishments of people on occasions such as festivals or births and forcefully demand more money than what people voluntarily offer. This notification prohibits any such uninvited visits to houses,» said Police Commissioner Amitesh Kumar, commenting on the Pune Police's decision to ban transgenders from forcefully asking for money.
Kumar stated that the order, issued under section 144 of the CrPC, was a response to numerous complaints received by the police. He added that the notification prohibits any uninvited visits to houses, and any violation of this order shall be dealt with under section 188 (Disobedience to an order duly promulgated by a public servant) of the Indian Penal Code and other relevant sections.
Kumar also mentioned that complaints were received regarding a significant lack of discipline at traffic junctions, causing inconvenience to commuters.
There have been numerous reports in the past regarding transgenders harassing people.
A 2023 Times of India report revealed how some members of the transgender community in Bengaluru were forcing people to pay more through UPI.
In 2021, according to a report by TOI, a group of transgenders held a family hostage when they failed to pay Rs 51,000 after the birth of their granddaughter. They also reportedly broke household items.
