Nirma detergent. Karsanbhai Patel, an Indian billionaire businessman hailing from Gujarat, founded Nirma. Patel was born in Gujarat's Ruppur in 1945 in a financially constrained family but his spirit driven by determination and the relentless pursuit of excellence, helped him carve a niche foe himself in business.
Karsanbhai Patel completed his graduation in Bachelors of Science in Chemistry and started his career as a lab assistant at the New Cotton Mills, a government lab, in Ahmedabad to earn a modest income. He then joined the Gujarat government’s Geology and Mining Department.

But it was his entrepreneurial spirit and ambition that made him give up his government job and follow his dream. In 1969, he started manufacturing detergent powder and sold handmade packets on his bicycle, reported the Financial Express.
Karsanbhai Patel identified a significant gap in the market that many consumers were unable to afford high-priced detergents. Patel saw this as an opportunity and this gave birth to a game-changing idea. He formulated a cost-effective detergent powder Nirma and with a small loan of Rs 15,000, Patel began manufacturing Nirma in his backyard using basic ingredients.
