Ravichandran Ashwin passed the milestone of 700 wickets in international cricket. On the first day of India's first Test against West Indies, the off spinner broke the back of West Indian Batting line up by picking up five wickets. Ashwin entered a select group of top wicket takers that is dominated by spinners.
India's all-time great, Anil Kumble, is the top wicket taker in this list with 956 international wickets on his name. Following him is turbunator Harbhajan Singh with a record of 711 wickets in international cricket. Ashwin will have a chance to surpass Harbhajan in the ongoing series against West Indies.
Ashwin's five-wicket haul against the West Indies was also his third Test five-for. Ashwin's 700th wicket came when Alzarri Joseph, eager to clear the boundary, fell victim to Ashwin's carom ball. Failing to read the delivery correctly, Joseph could only manage a thick edge that was comfortably taken by Jaydev Unadkat.
Joseph departed after scoring 4 runs from 11 balls. As for the match itself, the hosts were bowled out for a total of 150 runs during the third session of the opening day. Spinners dominated the proceedings, with Ashwin and Jadeja combining their skills to secure 8 wickets in total.
