gold smuggling attempt involving three passengers on a flight from Almaty, Uzbekistan to Delhi after their suspicious behaviour during the journey raised alarms. The eagle-eyed staff onboard the flight alerted the captain who contacted customs officers at Delhi's IGI airport to intercept the passengers.
The incident occurred aboard a flight en route to India, a three-and-a-half-hour late-night journey. While most passengers accepted meal services, three individuals repeatedly refused offerings from the air hostess, including water and tea. Their unusual stillness and abrupt refusals drew the air hostess’s attention, prompting her to inform the flight captain. Acting on her concerns, the captain alerted customs officials via air traffic control.
When the flight landed at Delhi’s Indira Gandhi International Airport around 1:30 a.m., customs officers were prepared to intercept the suspects. Despite initially passing through the green channel without detection, the trio was subjected to further scrutiny. Baggage X-rays and a Door Frame Metal Detector (DFMD) inspection revealed no evidence of concealed items.
Persistent in their investigation, customs officials escorted the passengers to a private room for questioning. Under interrogation, the individuals confessed to hiding gold pieces within their bodies. A thorough search recovered eight gold pieces weighing approximately 439 grams, concealed in their rectums.
The passengers were promptly arrested and taken into custody.
