Foreign portfolio investors (FPIs) bought Indian equities worth Rs 1.77 lakh crore in 2023, the highest-ever by them in history, in rupee terms.
And, it’s interesting to note that almost one-third of the inflows came only in December, which was also the highest inflows in a month in 2023.
What’s more? Almost 45% of the total inflows in December went into just one sector – Financials.
The financial services sector, which forms the largest part of FPIs’ portfolio, received inflows worth a staggering Rs 29,168 crore in December, according to NSDL data.
This was the highest monthly inflows seen by the sector in December.
This was also the highest that the sector had seen in several months.
The cumulative inflows in the financial services sector in 2023 was Rs 50,188 crore, with more than half of this flowing in December.
After financial services, the two sectors to receive inflows of more than Rs 5,000 crore each in December were information technology and capital goods.
FPIs bought IT stocks worth Rs 5,185 crore, and capital goods stocks worth Rs 5,103 crore.
Consumer services, automobiles and auto ancillaries, construction materials, and healthcare sectors saw inflows of over Rs 3,300-3,600 crore in December.
The sectors that saw outflows in the last month were oil and gas, real estate, and media and entertainment.
