Manipur hit the national headlines, India's top court took strong note of the incident, terming it «simply unacceptable». The said video was reportedly shot on May 4, during the first phase of frenzied violence in the state.
The Supreme Court said on July 20 it is «deeply disturbed» by the video. A bench headed by Chief Justice DY Chandrachud directed the Centre and the state government to take immediate action.
The administrations were told to apprise the top court of the action taken. «We will give a little time to the government to act otherwise we will take action if nothing is happening on the ground,» the bench, also comprising Justices P S Narasimha and Manoj Misra, said.
Meanwhile, tension has reached a crescendo in the state after the emergence of the video — which shows two women from one of the rival communities (Meitei and Kuki) being paraded naked and molested by men from the other community. The video is doing the rounds ahead of a planned protest march to be held by the Indigenous Tribal Leaders' Forum (ITLF) to underline their plight.
According to state police, a case of abduction, gang rape and murder has been registered at Nongpok Sekmai police station in Thoubal district against unknown armed miscreants. As per reports, the alleged mastermind behind the ghastly incident has been nabbed.
