Emily Hampshire, famed for her role as Stevie Budd on «Schitt's Creek,» became the center of a controversy following her Halloween costume choice. Hampshire and a friend decided to don costumes that depicted Johnny Depp and Amber Heard, which promptly led to a firestorm on social media.
The decision to go with the appearances of Depp and Heard, particularly as they were seen during their contentious 2022 libel trial, was met with immediate backlash online.
In response to criticism, Hampshire took down the photos and issued a heartfelt apology. In her statement, she acknowledged the insensitivity of her actions, stating, «I want to address what is one of the most thoughtless, insensitive, and ignorant things I've ever done.» She expressed deep remorse and recognized that domestic abuse should not be trivialized or turned into a costume.
“For Halloween, I stupidly thought it would be funny to dress as Johnny Depp and Amber Heard.
I am deeply sorry and ashamed for putting something that awful out in the universe,” she said.
“Domestic abuse is never, ever funny…These are real issues with real people and I REALLY regret my actions. In the future I will do better.
I’m so sorry,” Hampshire added.
The uproar surrounding Hampshire's costume underscores the ongoing public sensitivity to the legal battle between Depp and Heard. The trial, which concluded with mixed verdicts for both parties, drew intense media scrutiny and divided public opinion.
