ESPN reported that the 21-year-old is dealing with deep vein thrombosis (DVT) in his right shoulder, a serious condition involving blood clots. The Spurs had initially listed him as doubtful due to an illness before confirming the diagnosis.
Deep vein thrombosis cuts short Wembanyama’s breakout season
Wembanyama has had an outstanding sophomore season. The 7-foot-3 Frenchman was averaging 24.3 points, 11 rebounds, 3.8 blocks, and 3.7 assists per game. His dominant performances earned him his first All-Star selection, with NBA veteran Kevin Durant calling him “one of the greatest we’ve ever seen” during All-Star Weekend, the Statesman reported.
Wembanyama was a top candidate for Defensive Player of the Year, leading the league in blocks. However, his early exit means he will not meet the 65-game requirement to qualify for postseason awards.

The Spurs, currently 12th in the Western Conference with a 23-29 record, were hoping to push for a play-in spot. However, Wembanyama’s absence significantly lowers their chances of a postseason run.
