Srinagar Assembly Elections 2024: Jammu and Kashmir will be holding its first assembly elections since the BJP-led central government abrogated Article 370, which gave the union territory a special status. The Election Commission is likely to announce dates for the assembly elections on Friday.
Out of the total 90 seats in Jammu and Kashmir, Srinagar districts hold nine important constituencies among which are Lal Chowk and Chanapora. The other seats are in Hazratbal, Khanyar, Habba Kadal, Zadibal, Eidgah, and Central Shalteng.
The major parties that are expected to contest the elections are the Jammu and Kashmir People's Democratic Party led by Mehbooba Mufti, Jammu and Kashmir National Conference headed by Omar Abdullah, the BJP, and the INC, among others.
Jammu and Kashmir has 87.09 lakh voters, including 42.6 lakh women, across the 90 constituencies.
In December last year, the Supreme Court directed the central government to conclude the election process in the Union territory by September 30, 2024.
Jammu and Kashmir will witness elections after a gap of ten years as the last assembly election was held in 2014. The PDP-BJP coalition government fell in June 2018 when the latter withdrew support to the then-Chief Minister, Mehbooba Mufti.
