Star Trek: Prodigy,' which got canceled during the production of its second season by Paramount+, has secured a new platform.
Netflix has acquired the first season of the show and has committed to airing the upcoming second season upon its completion. The first season is set to be available for streaming later this year.
The second season is expected in 2024.
Paramount+, supported by Paramount Global, canceled 'Prodigy' in June, following a trend of utilizing tax write-offs. At that time, they also canceled 'Grease: Rise of the Pink Ladies,' 'The Game' revival, and unscripted series 'Queen of the Universe.'
What made the cancellation of 'Prodigy' surprising was that it was produced in-house by CBS Studios, where Star Trek's Alex Kurtzman, with a significant overall deal, resides.
The Star Trek franchise has been vital for the platform, and Kurtzman aimed to expand its universe to attract a new generation of fans, who could share the experience with their parents.
Paramount+ continues to host 'Star Trek: Discovery,' 'Star Trek: Picard,' 'Star Trek: Strange New Worlds,' and the adult-oriented animated series 'Star Trek: Lower Decks.' Furthermore, 'Star Trek: Section 31' and 'Star Trek: Starfleet Academy,' both produced by CBS Studios and Kurtzman's Secret Hideout banner, are coming to the platform soon.
Kevin and Dan Hageman are the showrunners of 'Prodigy,' with executive producers including Kurtzman, Heather Kadin, Aaron Baiers, Rod Roddenberry, and Trevor Roth.
The voice cast features Kate Mulgrew, Brett Gray, Ella Purnell, Rylee Alazraqui, Angus Imrie, Jason Mantzoukas, Dee Bradley Baker, John Noble, and Jimmi Simpson. Daveed Diggs, Jameela Jamil, Jason Alexander, Robert Beltran, and Billy Campbell make recurring
