The techie, who shared his experience on Reddit, explained that he decided to drive a cab after his wife left her job to care for their baby. While exploring side hustle options, he initially considered starting a daycare but dropped the idea after learning about legal restrictions. This led him to try his hand at driving for a ride-hailing service.
To get started, he rented a cab for Rs 1,100 per day from a listing on OLX. However, he also had to cover fuel costs from his earnings. “For the first hour, it was chaotic. I didn’t know how to use the app or where to wait for good rides,” he admitted.
A Mixed Start with Some Surprises
His first ride took him from Kamothe to Taloja, earning him Rs 166. A longer trip from Kamothe to Andheri brought in Rs 574, while another trip from Andheri to Khar, followed by Khar to Mohammed Ali Road, added Rs 588 to his total.
One of the most notable moments of his day came when he picked up a passenger in Vashi. The fare was Rs 302, but the rider, who also worked in the IT sector, paid him Rs 501 as a gesture of goodwill. “The passenger belonged to a similar profession and gave Rs 501 as shagun,” he wrote.
Another memorable ride was from Mohammed Ali Road to Vashi, where an affluent passenger booked an offline trip for Rs 500 and even provided an iftar meal and a Mountain Dew during the journey.
