Ian McKellen takes on the role of a sharp-tongued theater critic in 1930s London in the new trailer for The Critic. The film also stars Gemma Arterton and Mark Strong and is set for release on September 13, 2024.
Ian McKellen plays Jimmy Erskine, a theater critic for the Daily Chronicle. Known for his harsh reviews, he has compared actor Nina Land, played by Gemma Arterton, to livestock, sea creatures, and an extinct bird. When Nina confronts him, he persuades her to seduce the new Chronicle owner, David Brooke, played by Mark Strong. Brooke, in turn, wants his lover to receive positive reviews.
The cast includes Lesley Manville as Land’s mother, Ben Barnes as Land’s love interest, and Romola Garai, Alfred Enoch, and Nikesh Patel in supporting roles.

The Critic is directed by Anand Tucker, known for Hilary and Jackie and Shopgirl. This film marks his first feature since 2010's Leap Year. The movie is adapted from Anthony Quinn's 2015 novel Curtain Call, with a script by Patrick Marber, an Oscar nominee for Notes on a Scandal. The score is by Craig Armstrong, known for his work on Ray, Love Actually, and The Incredible Hulk.
The Critic will be released in theaters on September 13, 2024. The Critic premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival, receiving mixed reviews and holding a 47% «Rotten» rating on Rotten Tomatoes.
