Heritage (INTACH) has honoured The Oberoi Grand, Kolkata, with a distinguished blue cultural plaque, commemorating its esteemed heritage and historical significance as the "Grande Dame of Chowringhee.”

Fondly known as the «Grande Dame of Chowringhee,» The Oberoi Grand unveils a captivating saga steeped in history, tracing its roots back to the 1800s when it adorned the landscape as the residence of a British Colonel.
Later, it was turned into a boarding house by Mrs. Annie Monk of Ireland.
In 1914, Mr. Aratoon Stephen acquired the property, along with the adjacent Theatre Royal and Calcutta Club, envisioning it as The Grand Hotel, Kolkata – a magnificent architectural masterpiece featuring five hundred rooms and modern amenities, including electricity, a novelty for the city at the time.
