The series takes inspiration from Kate Andersen Brower’s book, The Residence: Inside the Private World of the White House. It is described as a whodunit with a comedic twist. The story unfolds in different parts of the White House, including the upstairs, downstairs, and backstairs areas.
Uzo Aduba plays Cordelia Cupp, a detective for the Metropolitan Police Department. Known for her unique investigative methods and attention to human behavior, Cupp brings an unconventional approach to solving cases. She teams up with Randall Park, who portrays FBI Special Agent Edwin Park. Although skeptical of Cupp's style, Park collaborates with her to solve a mystery during a State Dinner at the White House.
The series features a large ensemble cast, including Giancarlo Esposito, Edwina Findley, Molly Griggs, Jason Lee and others. Paul William Davies is the creator, writer and showrunner. Shonda Rhimes and Betsy Beers serve as executive producers alongside Davies.
