Federal Investigation
The National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) is investigating the collapse of the Francis Scott Key Bridge in Baltimore, Maryland. Officials have identified 68 bridges that may face similar risks. The bridges include some of the most frequently used in the country.
Key Bridges
The list of bridges includes the Golden Gate Bridge, the Chesapeake Bay Bridge and several major New York City bridges. Other bridges named include the Chicago Skyway and the Huey P. Long Bridge near New Orleans.
Bridge Collapse
The Francis Scott Key Bridge collapsed into the Patapsco River nearly a year ago. The cargo ship Dali, measuring 984 feet, lost power and hit the bridge supports. The collapse led to the deaths of six construction workers.

Lack of Risk Assessments
NTSB Chair Jennifer L. Homendy stated that many authorities have not conducted risk assessments. She stressed the need for immediate action to ensure public safety. Investigators found that Maryland’s transit authority had never conducted a risk assessment for the Key Bridge. A federal analysis later showed that its risk of disaster was 30 times higher than recommended limits.
Geographic Spread of Unassessed Bridges
The 68 bridges without risk assessments span 19 states. New York has 13, Louisiana has eight, and California and Texas have seven each. Other states with unassessed bridges include Florida, New Jersey, Oregon, Georgia and Michigan.
