"They want to create Hindia": Kamal Haasan slams Centre’s delimitation plan, says non-Hindi states will always suffer most
Makkal Needhi Maiam President Kamal Haasan has strongly criticised the Union government’s plan for parliamentary constituency delimitation, warning that it could weaken India’s federal structure and diversity.
Speaking at an All-Party Meeting on the issue, Haasan stated that the move could harm India’s inclusive vision by promoting a homogenised «Hindia.»
Why Is Haasan Opposing Delimitation?
Haasan pointed out that the issue of constituency delimitation based on population is not just a concern for Tamil Nadu but also affects states such as Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka, Kerala, Punjab, Odisha, West Bengal, Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand, and the Northeastern states. He expressed gratitude to Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M K Stalin for organising the meeting and appreciated the presence of various political parties that set aside their differences to participate.
Haasan also quoted Thiruvalluvar: «A person who does not take preventive action in advance will perish like dry grass thrown into the fire.» He stressed that the meeting was necessary to address the issue before it could negatively impact the nation.
Should States Be Penalised for Population Control?
Haasan firmly stated his stance: «States that cooperated for national development by controlling population growth should not be punished.» He explained that democracy and federalism must be prioritised, calling them the «two eyes» of India’s governance.
