TikTok star Kat Abughazaleh challenges long-time Democrat in Illinois’ 9th District

Kat Abughazaleh announced her candidacy for Illinois’ 9th Congressional District. She has challenged long-time Democratic incumbent Jan Schakowsky in what could be the district’s first competitive primary since 1998.
Abughazaleh, aged 26, is a freelance content creator with no prior experience in politics. She does not currently live in the district and has been in Illinois for less than a year, stated the media reports. However, she is determined to disrupt the status quo.

As per a Rolling Stone report, she cited frustration with the Democratic Party’s response to the challenges of everyday Americans. Kat said that the public is in an emergency and that the only way to fight authoritarianism is to be loud, and proud every single day.

A Different Kind of Candidate

Abughazaleh, as per the Rolling Stones report, acknowledged that she is an unlikely congressional candidate. She has no significant political backing, a rental lease she cannot break. The content creator told the publication that she does not have health insurance since she was laid off in 2024.

Kat has been diagnosed with narcolepsy in her teens and she relies on prescription medication to function, the report added. She said that this resonated with millions of Americans who are struggling to afford healthcare.

Kat said that 40 per cent of Americans have a chronic illness and that she wanted to be open about her diagnosis.

Even with these obstacles, Abughazaleh thinks Congress must have more members who have experienced economic struggle directly. She intends to make issues like affordable housing, access to healthcare, and public transportation her top priorities.
