OceanGate's Titan submersible tragedy is reportedly being adapted as a film notwithstanding the criticism on social media platforms. While there have been no specific cast or plot details revealed yet, news of the film has generated significant backlash on social media, particularly among X (formerly Twitter) users.
Many of them are expressing the sentiment that Hollywood's involvement in such a project is 'premature', according to reports.
The announcement of the first full-length movie centered around the submarine comes approximately four months after the submersible, owned by OceanGate Expeditions, suffered an implosion while en route to explore the Titanic wreckage.
The Titan submersible went missing during a deep sea underwater excursion near the wreckage of the Titanic in the Atlantic Ocean in June 2023.
The feature film based on the tragic story behind OceanGate's Titan submersible is being developed by «Blackening» producer E Brian Dobbins and MindRiot Entertainment. According to entertainment news outlet Deadline, Dobbins will serve as a co-producer on the fiction project, which will be penned by MindRiot's Justin MacGregor and Jonathan Keasey.
The project is part of MindRiot's upcoming slate of docu-series, including one based around Seattle's underground rap scene.
Initial reports suggested that acclaimed director James Cameron, known for his work on «Titanic,» would be involved in the project.
However, the «Avatar» creator vehemently dismissed this idea, deeming it «offensive.»
68-year-old Cameron clarified his stance by stating, «I typically don't respond to offensive rumors in the media, but I must do so now. I am NOT in discussions regarding an OceanGate film, and I never will be.»
