Netflix has unveiled the first trailer for «May December,» directed by Todd Haynes and featuring Natalie Portman and Julianne Moore in leading roles.
The film explores a scandalous relationship between a married woman and a 13-year-old, reminiscent of the May-December romance between teacher Mary Kay Letourneau and Vili Fualaau, which made headlines two decades ago.
Julianne Moore's character, similar to Mary Kay Letourneau, faced legal consequences for her involvement with an underage teenager but later married him, relocating to lead a quiet family life.
The movie delves into the dynamics between this couple, portrayed by Moore and Charles Melton, and an actor played by Natalie Portman, who travels to Maine to study the life of the woman she's set to depict in a film. The narrative is marked by the reemergence of unresolved issues, adding tension to the romantic drama.
In «May December,» Portman takes on the role of Elizabeth, a television star researching her character by immersing herself in the lives of Gracie (played by Moore) and her much younger husband, Joe (Charles Melton). The official description notes that as Elizabeth seeks to get closer to the family, the uncomfortable truths of their scandal come to light, stirring up long-buried emotions.
The film had its world premiere at Cannes and was snapped up by Netflix for $11 million in a competitive bidding war for North American distribution rights. «May December» will kick off the New York Film Festival on September 29.
Written by first-time screenwriter Samy Burch, the film is based on a script from The Black List. It will first hit theaters in the United States on November 17 before becoming available
