But as economic fault-lines on either side of the Atlantic become more visible after the first week of Donald Trump 2.0 in the Oval Office, policy rates are under the spotlight yet again. Trump’s televised address last week to billionaires and policy mandarins in Davos focused on the need to reduce the cost of funds and fuel – the two all-weather growth engines for any economy.
India is no exception either. New Delhi will fervently hope that if mega funds are indeed sunk to unearth more of what the Potus described as “liquid gold under our feet,” prices of motor fuel would trend lower on an expected supply glut. That will be great news for India’s current account – and for currency stability, too.
But oil economics are rather complex. Besides geopolitics that spawn a puzzling web of sanctions, the rate of return on invested capital will largely determine whether Trump’s ‘drill baby, drill’ slogan will actually translate into necessary prospecting investments. Even so, a tangible increase in output, at least in the US, might face long odds as daily production is already at a record high.
