U.S. workers’ filings for unemployment benefits fell for the fourth straight week last week, a sign of continued tightness in the labor market.
Initial jobless claims, a proxy for layoffs, fell to a seasonally adjusted 222,000 last week from a revised 228,000 the previous week, the Labor Department said Thursday. Claims have been ticking down in August after moving up earlier in the summer.
