According to reports in the Navbharat Times, singer Udit Narayan is now in the spotlight again due to a maintenance case filed by his first wife, Ranjana Jha. On February 21, he appeared before the Supaul Family Court, where he refused to reach a settlement with Ranjana and decided to contest the case.
Ranjana claimed that Udit not only abandoned her but also kept Rs 18 lakh from the sale of a property in Nepal. She further alleged that whenever she visits Mumbai to meet him, she is followed by hired goons. She insisted that she was only fighting for her legal rights, as she was never given the status of a wife despite being married to him. Her lawyer, Ajay Kumar, stated that Ranjana wishes to live with Udit due to her age and declining health. While the court attempted to mediate a settlement, Udit Narayan firmly refused, making it clear that he would not take her back.
The case has now taken a new turn, as human rights lawyer S.K. Jha has filed petitions with both the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) and the Bihar Human Rights Commission (BHRC). Jha argued that under Indian law, a second marriage without divorcing the first wife is illegal under the Hindu Marriage Act. Therefore, Udit’s second marriage should be considered void and unlawful. He emphasized that by denying his first wife her rights, Udit has displayed a disregard for her
