Ukraine open to energy ceasefire, but Volodymyr Zelensky demands details from Donald Trump
Ukraine has signalled support for a U.S.-proposed pause in attacks on Russian energy infrastructure. The agreement, backed by Washington and Moscow, follows a call between U.S. President Donald Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, however, made it clear that Kyiv needed more details before making a final decision.
«After we get the details from the U.S. president, from the U.S. side, we will give our answer,» Zelensky said in an online briefing. He added that Ukraine would honour the agreement as long as Moscow also adhered to it. «Our side will maintain it,» he stated, but stressed that the U.S. should act as «guarantors of control over the implementation.»
Moscow’s Conditions for a Broader Peace
The Kremlin confirmed that Putin had agreed to a 30-day halt on strikes against Ukraine’s energy infrastructure. However, Moscow linked the possibility of a wider ceasefire to a complete halt in Western military and intelligence assistance to Ukraine.
Zelensky dismissed this as an unrealistic demand, stating, «They are not ready to end this war, and we can see that. They are not ready even for the first step, which is a ceasefire.» He further warned that Putin’s strategy was to «weaken» Ukraine rather than pursue lasting peace.
Diplomatic Discussions with European Leaders
Following the Trump-Putin conversation, Zelensky held talks with key European allies, including French President Emmanuel Macron and German Chancellor Olaf Scholz. He emphasised the need for direct discussions with Trump to understand what was exchanged between the U.S. and Russia.
