Ukraine holds significant reserves of rare earth elements, essential for manufacturing high-performance magnets, electric motors, and consumer electronics. Zelenskyy stated that less than 20% of Ukraine’s mineral resources, including around half of its rare earth deposits, are under Russian control. He warned that Russia could open these resources to allies like North Korea and Iran, posing a strategic threat to the U.S. and its partners.
Additionally, Ukraine possesses Europe’s largest reserves of titanium, crucial for the aviation and space industry, and uranium, vital for nuclear energy. Most of Ukraine’s titanium deposits are located in the northwestern part of the country, far from the current conflict zones.
Trump’s administration is focused on securing mineral supplies to reduce dependency on China. In response, Zelenskyy welcomed a deal but emphasized that Ukraine is not offering to “give away” its resources. Instead, he proposed a mutually beneficial partnership for joint development.
“The Americans helped the most, and therefore the Americans should earn the most. And they should have this priority, and they will,” Zelenskyy stated.
