India and the US are both facing similar impacts of climate change, and the US can learn a lot from India on managing these, the US Ambassador to India, Eric Garcetti, said on Thursday.
Speaking at The Energy Transition Dialogues being organised by the Global Energy Alliance (GEAPP) in New Delhi, Garcetti said that even in places like Los Angeles, people die every day because they don't have access to air conditioning. “They don't have access to what they need.
We have children who drop out of school because they're waiting for buses when it's too hot, elderly can't go shopping or to their health appointments,” he said.
The event is being held from November 1-3.
The Ambassador said extreme weather creates incalculable damage to infrastructure across the world, and access to food, to shelter to health care and transportation are all impacted.
“In California, my home state, our estimates in the last two years show that more than $2.2 trillion came from damage due to fires, floods and more,” he said.
US President Joe Biden recently told Prime Minister Narendra Modi that the relationship between the countries wasn't just the “United States plus India”, he said.
“It is India times the US. It's an exponential relationship.
Look at how we landed the best G20 ever in our history together — of course, led by India,” he added.
