Shavkat Mirziyoyev, who is tipped to be re-elected for another term following the election held on Sunday, has expressed hope of expanding ties with India to counter the menace of terrorism and radicalisation across the region. Mirziyoyev is also seeking to cooperate with India for a stable Afghanistan which would facilitate stable and secure Eurasia by countering extremism, according to people aware of the matter.
Uzbekistan remains worried over cross-border extremism and radicalisation of youth, they said, adding that there is a trend among a section of the youths in the region to espouse extremist ideology, including ISIS, which is worrying regional powers. On the invitation of the Central Election Commission of Uzbekistan, a delegation of the Election Commission of India led by election commissioner Anup Chandra Pandey is visiting Uzbekistan to observe the country's presidential election.
