Vijay Diwas is celebrated every year on December 16 to commemorate India’s victory over Pakistan in the 1971 war. The war also resulted in the liberation of Bangladesh.
The day is a high point in Indian history and the country pays tribute to bravery and sacrifice of the armed forces.
The war in 1971 between India and Pakistan began on December 3 and lasted 13 days. The war broke out because of the humanitarian crisis in the then East Pakistan. The Pakistani army had launched a campaign against the civilian population of the region. India intervened to support the people in their struggle for independence.
On December 16, 1971, Pakistani General Amir Abdullah Khan Niazi, the commander of the Pakistani forces, formally surrendered to the combined forces of India and Bangladesh’s Mukti Bahini.
