Speaking at a press conference in Kyiv on the third anniversary of Russia’s full-scale invasion, Zelenskyy identified Estonia, Latvia, Poland, Moldova, and Slovakia as potential targets. He cautioned that Russia could use the presence of Russian-speaking populations in these nations — similar to its justification for annexing Crimea in 2014 — as a pretext for further aggression, according to media reports.
A report by The Mirror quoted Zelenskyy as saying that many of these nations were once part of the Soviet Union or historically within Russia’s sphere of influence.
According to the report, Zelenskyy argued that any country with a significant Russian-speaking population is at risk. He pointed out that Russia initially claimed it was not occupying Ukrainian territory but merely protecting Russian speakers. He warned that if Ukraine falls, the aforementioned nations could be next due to Russia’s geopolitical ambitions and its concept of the ‘Russian world.’
Historically, Latvia, Estonia, and Moldova were part of the Russian Empire and later the Soviet Union. Latvia and Estonia have significant Russian-speaking communities, while Moldova has tens of
