Warning signs for Donald Trump: MAGA grip weakens in key strongholds as President's own pollster sounds the alarm on fading support
Donald Trump carried by landslide margins just months ago. In the 6th District, which Trump won by 30 points in 2024, Democratic candidate Josh Weil, a local teacher, now trails Republican state Rep. Randy Fine by just 3 points according to a March poll from Trump’s campaign pollster Tony Fabrizio. The shift has rattled GOP leaders, who hoped to easily retain seats once held by Trump allies Matt Gaetz and Michael Waltz.
A Toss-Up in Trump Territory
The 6th District, spanning Daytona Beach and parts of central Florida, has voted Republican in every presidential election since 1944 in some counties. Trump secured 65% of the vote here in 2024, while former Rep. Waltz won his final reelection with 67 per cent. Republicans, meanwhile, are scrambling to avoid embarrassment. Trump personally joined tele-town halls with both GOP candidates, Fine and Jimmy Patronis (running in the 1st District), urging supporters to turn out for “all-important” races that could shape the party’s midterm momentum.
Stakes High for Both Parties

A Democratic win in either district, or even narrow losses in areas Trump dominated by 30+ points, would energize a party still reeling from November’s electoral wipeout. For Republicans, holding these seats is critical to maintaining unity in their fractious caucus and proving their agenda resonates in post-Trump Florida. Analysts note that Waltz outperformed Trump in every county in the 6th District during his 2024
