Viet Thanh Nguyen’s Pulitzer Prize-winning novel of the same name, 'The Sympathizer', stars Hoa Xuande, Toan Le, Phanxine, Vy Le, Fred Nguyen Khan, Ky Duyen, Duy Nguyen, Kieu Chinh, Alan Trong, Sandra Oh and Robert Downey Jr. The seven-episode series depicts the life and struggles of a half-French, half-Vietnamese communist spy during the final days of the Vietnam War. He begins a new life as a refugee in Los Angeles, where he learns that his spying days aren’t over.
HBO has released a new trailer, which updates a previous teaser with an expanded look at Oh’s character. It also emphasizes the dual life the Captain must lead in his new home.

HBO is set to release the series on April 14, its seventh and last episode will arrive on May 26, a few days before the eligibility window for the 2024 Emmys closes.
The Sympathizer is a co-production between HBO, A24, and Rhombus Media, produced in association with Moho Film and Cinetic Media. Don McKellar is co-showrunner, executive producer, and writer. 'The Sympathizer' has been executive produced by Park, McKellar and Downey along with Susan Downey and Amanda Burrell for Team Downey; Niv Fichman for Rhombus Media; and Kim Ly, Ron Schmidt, Nguyen and Moho Film’s Jisun Back.
Fernando Meirelles and Marc Munden will direct the film while Mark Richard, Naomi Iizuka, Maegan Houang, Anchuli Felicia King and Tea Ho have written the series.
