India getting re-Christened as ‘Bharat’!
Bollywood’s ‘Queen’ Kangana Ranaut too joined the discourse. Taking to X (formerly Twitter), she retweeted an old clip of spiritual influencer Sadhguru advocating why the country’s name should be changed to Bharat and wrote that he had predicted such a development decades ago.
“My guru said it decades ago, I am nothing but mere dust of his feet, he is on Kailash yatra, he doesn’t know yet but this remarkable change of the name of this nation will bring him tears of joy, he will be returning not to India but to his beloved Bharat,” reads her post.
She argued that the name India was born from the name Indus which was created as foreigners could not pronounce the name ‘Sindhu’ properly.
“What is there to love in this name? First of all, they couldn’t pronounce ‘Sindhu’ toh usko bigad ke ‘ Indus’ kar diya.
Phir kabhi Hindos kabhi Indos kuch bhi gol mol karke India bana diya. From the time of Mahabharata, all the kingdoms who participated in the Great War of Kurukshetra came under one continent called Bharat so why were they calling us Indu Sindu??” she ranted.
As news of the Government issuing invitations to various esteemed guests for the President’s dinner (for the upcoming G20 summit) with the tagline ‘President Of Bharat’ rather than the usual ‘President Of India’ broke out, rumours of a possible official name change reigned supreme on desi Twitter.
Several celebrities and renowned public figures such as Amitabh Bachchan and ex-cricketer Virendra Sehwag, as well as Suhel Seth the entrepreneur and columnist, supported a possible name change.
Zoho CEO, Sridhar Vembu came out in support of changing the nation’s name.
