West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee urges junior doctors to end hunger strike
West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Saturday urged the junior doctors to end their hunger strike. She added that everybody had right to protest, but it should not affect healthcare services.
«Most of your demands fulfilled, give me 3-4 months more to meet the rest,» said Banerjee. She also requested the doctors to not differ with their demands, and called them to sit for talks with the government.
«Please withdraw the agitation. Some of the demands need policy decisions. We will cooperate to the fullest extent possible but it is not acceptable that you will dictate to the government what should be done,» she said.
Banerjee was speaking to them over the phone on Saturday afternoon when Chief Secretary Manoj Pant visited the site in Dharmatala.
Doctors hunger strike
The fast-unto-death by agitating junior doctors in West Bengal entered the 15th day on Saturday over demands for justice for the deceased post-graduate trainee of RG Kar Medical College and Hospital and workplace security. So far, six fasting doctors have been hospitalised after their health condition deteriorated.
