The World Health Organization has declared the new Omicron variant of the coronavirus a “variant of concern,” indicating that it carries higher risks than other virus strains.
The U.S. is restricting travel from South Africa and seven other countries as a precautionary measure to prepare for the arrival of the variant in the U.S. The variant has also been detected in travelers to the U.K., Netherlands, Italy, Australia, Israel and Hong Kong, among others.
