India scripted T20 history as they defeated South Africa by seven runs in a nerve-wrecking final to win the Twenty20 World Cup at the Kensington Oval in Bridgetown, Barbados on Saturday. Choosing to bat on a dry surface after winning the toss, the 2007 champions overcame a top-order collapse to post a competitive 176-7.
Virat Kohli (76) scored his first fifty of this season of T20 World Cup, and Axar Patel added a vital 47 to boost India’s total and help the Men in Blue for a strong finish. Anrich Nortje and Keshav Maharaj took two wickets each for South Africa.
In reply, the Proteas also experienced a top-order collapse, but Quinton de Kock (39) and Tristan Stubbs (31) revived their chase and brought back South Africa in the hunt. Heinrich Klaasen (52) launched a spectacular counter-attack, but India’s precise death-overs bowling restricted South Africa to 169-8.
Arshdeep Singh bowled the 19th over and conceded just 4 runs. Hardik Pandya, who was chosen to bowl the last over, did a fabulous job as he picked up two wickets and sealed the deal for India. Talking after winning the championship, teary-eyed Pandya recalled the IPL trolling. Meanwhile, Virat Kohli announced retirement from T20I cricket. He said that it was time for next generation.
