Rahul Gandhi to remove a social media post concerning the alleged rape and murder of a minor Dalit girl in Delhi in 2021. The court emphasized the need to protect the identity of the victim on a global scale. Rahul's counsel was informed by the court that while the post had been geo-blocked within India, it remained accessible outside the country.
The bench, consisting of acting Chief Justice Manmohan and Justice Mini Pushkarna, directed Rahul's counsel to take prompt action to remove the tweet.
The court stressed the significance of ensuring that the post is taken down worldwide to safeguard the identity of the minor victim.
The bench pointed out the potential consequences if the post continued to circulate, stating, «If we have to protect the identity of the victim, it is necessary it is done all over the world… Why don't you take it down? Please take down your post because worldwide it must come down. Please seek instructions… otherwise it will be picked up by the press all over the world.
It can't be done like this. Please get it down.»
The court also directed Delhi Police to submit a detailed status report on the investigation into Gandhi within four weeks, in a sealed cover. The next hearing is scheduled for January 24, 2024.
Following the dissemination of the social media post, Rahul Gandhi's account faced suspension by the platform for a temporary period.
