Donald Trump to the White House could have significant implications for over 1,500 individuals charged with crimes related to the Jan. 6, 2021, Capitol riots. On the campaign trail, Trump frequently referred to those convicted as «political prisoners» and promised to pardon them if reelected.
Now, with his victory, questions loom about whether these promises signal a shift in accountability for the events of that day.
As of November 2024, approximately 1,542 individuals have been charged with offenses stemming from the Capitol riots.

According to NPR data, 999 of these defendants have pleaded guilty, with another 174 convicted on all charges. Only three individuals have been acquitted, while 1,030 have already been sentenced.
