The other three key overseas guests are the leaders of Bangladesh, Nepal and Bhutan, affirming long-standing ties and bolstering India’s push to counterbalance Chinese influence in the immediate neighbourhood. China has been making inroads into the region and eyeing strategic assets that could threaten India's security interests, experts said. India plans to step up its engagement with countries in the region and offer projects that could offset Chinese designs in the region in the long term.
Among the four countries from the Indian Ocean Region, all eyes will be on Maldives President Mohamed Muizzu, who rode to power on a pro-China, anti-India campaign and persisted with that rhetoric until his party won parliamentary polls a few months ago.
