Supreme Court has constituted a three-member women judicial committee, comprising three former high court judges, to examine «relief, remedial measures, compensation, restoration of houses» and other humanitarian issues of Manipur's violence victims. A bench headed by CJI DY Chandrachud issued a direction to this effect on Monday. The committee will be headed by Gita Mittal, retired chief justice of J&K High Court.
The other two members will be former HC judges Shalini Joshi and Asha Menon. It will be a «broad based committee», which will also look into relief to be provided to those living in camps. The bench also appointed former Maharashtra DGP and NIA and Intelligence Bureau officer Dattatray Padsalgikar to supervise the CBI probe into cases of sexual violence against women and children.
The bench ordered that five officers of the rank of deputy superintendent of police be brought into CBI from various states to oversee the probe. The CJI clarified the bench is «not going to supplant» CBI which is already investigating the cases. «At the same time our mission is to ensure there is a sense of faith and objective,» the CJI said.
The said five officers will be nominated by respective DGPs of states. They will be brought on deputation to CBI for «purpose of overseeing the investigation» into FIRs relating to sexual violence against women and children. The CJI said the officers «will also be functioning within the four corners of infrastructure and administrative set up of CBI».
