eviction drive in Silsako, Guwahati, Assam on Friday.
Hundreds of women took to the streets to protest against an alleged eviction drive against illegal land encroachment. While officials claim to have issued prior eviction notices, residents argued that they had no alternative housing options provided by the government, leaving them with nowhere to go.
In February of this year, the Guwahati Metropolitan Development Authority (GMDA) initiated the eviction drive at Silsako Beel, a protected wetland in Guwahati, Assam, resulting in the demolition of nearly 250 «illegally constructed» houses, with more demolitions expected.
Assam chief minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said that the government has assured to provide alternative arrangements to the affected people.
